Coal based carbon has a broader spread of pore sizes than coconut shell carbon, which helps it reach larger organic, colour and odour molecules. That makes it a practical choice for municipal and industrial wastewater, process water with a heavy organic load, solvent recovery and air and gas treatment.
We make it from bituminous coal at an iodine value of 800 to 1000 mg/g, with the mechanical strength an industrial bed needs through repeated backwashing.
Start with the contaminant and the flow rate rather than the headline iodine number. A carbon with a very high iodine value is not automatically better if the target molecule is too large for its smallest pores. Choose 4x8 for gas phase or very high flow, 8x16 for deep beds, and 12x40 where you want faster contact in a water filter.
