A high-grade carbon raiser with high fixed carbon and minimal impurities, for steel-making, foundry and carbon additive applications.
Calcining heats anthracite to drive off volatile matter and moisture and raise the proportion of fixed carbon. The result is a dense, high-carbon material that adds carbon to a melt predictably, without bringing much sulphur or volatile matter along with it.
In steel and foundry work the carbon raiser is judged by its yield and by what else it brings in. High fixed carbon means less material for the same carbon pick-up. Low sulphur protects the chemistry of the melt, and low moisture and volatile matter make for quieter, safer additions. Our material runs at 90 to 95% fixed carbon, with sulphur at 0.3% or below and volatile matter at 2% or below.
Calcined anthracite and anthracite filter media come from the same family of rock but do different jobs. Filter media is chosen for how it behaves in a water filter. Calcined anthracite is chosen for its carbon content. Please specify which one you need when you enquire.
