Black, shiny, hard anthracite granules with low dust and high dirt-holding capacity, for water treatment, wastewater, RO pre-filtration, swimming pools and cooling towers.
Anthracite strains suspended solids out of water physically. It does not adsorb dissolved chemicals the way activated carbon does, so the two often sit in the same plant doing different jobs. Its angular grains pack loosely, with a porosity of 45 to 55%, which gives the bed more room to hold dirt and lets it run longer between backwashes than a bed of sand alone.
With a specific gravity of 1.40 to 1.60, anthracite is lighter than filter sand, so it settles on top after a backwash. Water meets the coarse anthracite first and the fine sand second, and the full depth of the bed does useful work. Our guide to anthracite filter media covers loading and backwashing in detail.
Sizes run from 0.5 mm to 8 mm. Finer sizes give finer filtration, while coarser sizes carry higher flow and suit the support layers. Send your vessel size and flow rate and we will recommend a grading.
No. Anthracite filters out suspended solids physically, while activated carbon adsorbs dissolved molecules.
